DVES sixth graders who were awarded President’s Award for Educational Excellence are pictured at their last DVES awards assembly, which was held in June.  Each of these 41 students, along with other DVES classmates, will begin Delaware Valley Middle School this month. To earn this prestigious academic excellence award, students are required to earn a grade point average of 90 on a 100 point scale, (an A on a letter scale or a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale) beginning at fourth grade through the fall semester of the exiting grade.  In addition, they must either achieve high scores in reading or math on state tests or nationally-normed tests  or be recommended by a teacher, plus one other staff member, with at least one recommendation based upon outstanding achievement in such classes as English, mathematics, science, history, geography, art, foreign language, and any other course that reflects a school’s core curriculum. This judgment is to be supported by tangible evidence comprised of either results on teacher-made tests, portfolio assessment, or special projects. The second recommendation may address such criteria as involvement in community service or co-curricular activities, including tutoring other students or demonstration of creativity and achievement in the visual and performing arts. The school principal has final authority to determine which students receive this award.

DVES 2:

Delaware Valley Elementary School Presidential Volunteer Award recipients are pictured at the end of school award assembly held at their school in June.  Presidential Volunteer Service Awards reflect a long and proud tradition of volunteer service. The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and to encourage more people to serve. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.  DVES recipients received an official President’s Volunteer Service Award lapel pin, a personalized certificate of achievement, and a letter from President Barak Obama.  To earn the award, students had to submit a list of qualified volunteer hours, totaling, for bronze award 50 to 74 hours, for silver award 75 to 99 hours, and for gold award 100 hours or more.

  1. Bill Greenlaw says:

Congratulations to all the students that participated!

It is good to see programs such as the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the Presidential Volunteer Award used to encourage students. I am especially happy to see service encouraged in the schools. It is wonderful to see this emphasized at the age of elementary school students. Congratulations to all that worked to make these programs successful!
