SUSSEX, NJ— On Saturday, August 8,  at 7:30 PM Scott Rando, a researcher with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will present an informative program about bald eagles in the Upper Delaware region at the Interpretive Center in High Point State Park.

Rando will share some of his photographs and his experiences studying the region’s eagles, from monitoring and photographing them on their nests, to capturing and tracking them to learn more about their habitats and how they interact with human visitors.

Not long ago it was rare to see an eagle, but there has been a steady increase in the numbers of  bald eagles that overwinter along the Delaware River, and those that nest and raise their young there. In 2008 there were fifteen nesting pairs of bald eagles along the main stem of the Upper Delaware.

For more information about this and other programs at High Point State Park, call the Interpretive Center at (973) 875-1471 or go to www.highpointpark.blogspot.com.

PoconoArts Opens New Gallery

STROUDSBURG – The ARTSPACE gallery in downtown Stroudsburg opened its doors on June 6 as the newest PoconoArts public gallery.  Twenty-four artists are currently on exhibit with works ranging from oils to pastels and figurative to abstract.

The featured artist for August is Marcia Flammonde.  Marcia is a graduate of the School of performing Arts (New York City) with special honors.  She worked in theater with such notables as E.G. Marshall, Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghoff, studied with William Hickey and worked with director Joseph Chaiken.  Finding performance art insufficiently rewarding, she subsequently shifted to the creative and began painting, briefly in oil and then for more than a decade and a half in acrylics, during which period she concentrated on portraiture.  In 2008 she reverted to oil and continues exclusively in the medium today.  The inspiration for her work ranges more particularly from the infinite variety of faces for portraits to the even greater range of expressions in Nature from which her landscapes are drawn, especially from the character of her own home with its long lawns, pond, stream, great trees, and woods.  She has won many awards including Best in Show at the Pocono Arts Council’s Annual Members Exhibition.

Other artist scheduled to exhibit during August include Thomas Augusta, Irene Bartz, Jean Benfante, Jeff Bensley, Marion Colvin, Jorge Cruz, Will Daskal, Shirley Epstein, Jim Hannan, Helen Heeren, Marlana Holsten, John Kopp, Linda Mann, Don Manza, Lorena Masferrer, Lenore Fiore Mills, Marcos Oksenhandler, Ka-Son Reeves, Carlo Savo, Jim Smeltz, Richard Spezzano, JoAnn Stratakos and Julie Wane.   Media on exhibit includes oil, watercolor, photography, batik, stained glass, pottery, acrylic and more.   All exhibits are free and open to the public.

An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 1-4 PM.  The exhibit will run from August 1 – 30.  The ARTSPACE Gallery is located at 18 North 7th Street in Downtown Stroudsburg. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Saturday – Sunday Noon – 4:00 PM.  For more information, please visit www.artspacegallery.net or call 570-476-4460.
