ORANGE and PIKE COUNTIES Saturday March 13th 8:30 AM If you see or hear a lot of fire and rescue vehicles on the move this morning, be aware that some of this activity is a wide area practice drill involving the simulated collapse of an school on Route 209 in Cuddebackville.

Longtime residents will remember that coincidentally the windy, wet weather for this drill is eerily similar to the day of the Coldenham School collapse in Orange County, just outside of Newburgh, on November 16, 1989 when nine children were killed and eighteen others were injured.

Readers are reminded that they must still yield to emergency equipment and that actual emergency calls are occurring simultaneously.

MILFORD — In anticipation of weekend rain and associated snow melt, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the area that will be in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

According to the NWS, rainfall totals from one to two inches are expected in central New York and northeast Pennsylvania by midday on Sunday. Higher totals are possible in the Upper Delaware River Basin. There is potential for the Upper Delaware to come close to or exceed flood level over the weekend.

In addition to river flooding, areas of heavy rain could lead to localized flash flooding. The heaviest rain is forecast for Saturday night. Pike, Wayne, and Sullivan counties are among those named in the watch.

The FCR couldn’t have planned a more perfect weekend for a winter weather themed program. After days of what seemed like non-stop snowfall and three consecutive days of school being closed, kids couldn’t wait to get out of the house and have some fun! Event organizers joked that when they first planned the event they considered including outdoor snow play but worried that there might not be any on the ground!

While there was plenty of snow on the ground, the kids did stay inside and made some “snow” of their own! Arts and crafts activities included: paper snowflakes, snowflake ornaments, and edible snowmen. The children also listened to stories about snowmen and penguins, played “Snowman Says,” (like Simon Says) and enjoyed a snack of cookies and hot chocolate.

The FCR would like to thank the First Presbyterian Church of Milford for donating the use of their facility for this event.

For more information about PCPL, visit www.pcpl.org or call 570-296-8211. For more information about the Friends of the Children’s Room, email pcplfcr@gmail.com.
