Animal Response Team to the Rescue

WAYNE/PIKE COUNTY – When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, a significant number of citizens put themselves in danger when they refused to evacuate their flooded and destroyed homes because they didn’t want to abandon their pets.  Many others were forced to leave without their pets, adding to the anguish for these hurricane victims who had already lost so much.

Wayne and Pike Counties are in the process of joining together to establish a County Animal Response Team to ensure that this will never happen in our area in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

Our mission is to operate a temporary pet-friendly shelter, located in close proximity to a shelter prepared for families who need to evacuate their homes.   Our job will be to provide a safe environment for pets until such time as they can be united with families and returned to their homes.

If you would like more information concerning this new and much needed project, please contact Public Information Officer Judy Francesco at: 570-775-4036 or at nador2@enter.net.

Smoldering Fire Kills Dozens of Exotic Pets: Structural Damage Appears Light

By Don Quick

MILFORD  - Monday July 13 –   Milford firemen, with other area fire companies backing them up, have responded to  Sideshow Exotic Reptiles at 201 Water Street  in Milford after an employee who was opening for the day was met by choking smoke from burning plastic.

According to an unidentified employee, when the business closed for the night plastic containers containing rats and mice, which were destined to be food for the exotic snakes and other reptiles, were left on top of a heater which runs all year to keep the temperatures for the reptiles at a suitable level.

These containers melted and burned, resulting in the death of dozens of the pets in the store, apparently from excessive heat and, more particularly, from thick, black smoke which coated all surfaces in the store, including the sides of glass aquariums.

Employees could be seen removing aquariums from the business to the sidewalk, more often than not finding the future pets deceased.

The Milford Fire Department is ventilating the building at this time, and ascertaining that the localized fire did not extend into the structure itself.

The Pike County Press will follow this story if more develops.

The heater which caused the problem can be seen, with a thick plume of black soot extending up the wall. The large blob of plastic melted onto the floor is what remains of the plastic containers.

Update: By 3:15 PM all fire units have left the scene and the shocked and saddened owner, his family, friends and employees continue to monitor the condition of the surviving reptiles.

pj-pets-PhantaPhanta is at the shelter because her owner passed away and the family can’t afford to keep her. She is a Sheltie/Dalmatian-mix spayed female, nine years old. Phanta liked to sleep on her mat on the floor or on the couch. Squeak toys are her favorites. She know the commands for ’sit,’ ‘lay down,’ ’speak,’ ‘talk’ (growling), and ’sneeze’. They said she is ok with kids but is protective of her food at times. She is black and white with black freckles in her white fur and a white flag on her tail. Her cute face is half black and half white with freckles. This dog will make a great already trained companion so please consider her for adoption. Don’t let her age scare you. She still has spunk.
