In an effort to give domestic violence victims assistance in calling for help and to raise money for Safe Haven’s domestic violence agency, Cellular One has teamed up with Safe Haven by collecting used, unwanted cell phones. Many of the phones go to domestic violence victims for use in emergency situations, with others sold to provide funds for free services.
Some of the phones are provided to domestic violence victims or potential victims to call 911 in the event of an emergency. A cell phone can be programmed to call 911, regardless of whether the user has purchased a service plan or not. The phone simply needs to be charged. 911 services are automatic on any home or business phone where previous phone services had been in place; whether there is a dial tone or not.
Cellular One has three locations (Honesdale, Lords Valley, and Milford) for your convenience. To find the location nearest you, log onto their website at www.cellularone.com and enter your zip code. Cellular One is also conveniently open six days a week to accept donations and explain their cell phone services.
Additionally, cell phones can be dropped off at Safe Haven of Pike County, 500 West Harford Street between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please feel free to place cell phones on the porch after hours. For more information on how you can help, please call (570) 296-2827.

MILFORD – Safe Haven provided holiday gifts to more than 400 children last year. For many, these were the only gifts they received. Safe Haven’s staff experienced so many touching moments – from hearing stories of the families in need, to the donations that literally showed up mysteriously at the door when they were starting to feel that they couldn’t meet all the needs. It truly is a gift to be able to give!
This year, Safe Haven is expecting a much greater need and has, therefore, decided to reach even further into our community. Local organizations such as the Pike County Developmental Center, Pike County Youth Coalition, Milford Hill Learning Center, the Girl Scouts, Brownies, Cub Scouts, and female inmates in the Pike County Correctional Facility enrolled in the H.O.P.E (Helping Offenders Promote Excellence) Program, The Area of Aging, and Safe Haven volunteers are creating handmade ornaments to be placed on trees throughout Pike County. Each ornament will have a tag attached to it stating the first name, age, and a few gift ideas for that child. The ornament is yours to keep; all Safe Haven asks is that you return the unwrapped gifts along with the tag for the child you have offered to sponsor. These gifts will go to clients of Safe Haven, the Center for Developmental Disabilities, Pike County Children & Youth, and children of incarcerated parents at the Pike County Correctional Facility, Catholic Social Services, Mental Health Mental Retardation, Delaware Valley and Wallenpaupack School Districts.
A tree with these name-tag ornaments will be placed on the Safe Haven porch for your convenience. In addition, there will be other trees throughout Pike County. Please call Safe Haven’s Development Specialist/Community Outreach Coordinator, Sheila Korick at (570) 296-2827 to find a tree nearest you.
Please take a name and sponsor a child. Put the spirit of the season into someone else’s heart. Give them hope and let them know that others do care. You don’t need to get everything on their wish list; they are only suggestions. There aren’t any monetary requirements to participate in the “Gift of Giving” project. Do what you can. Even if it’s minimal to you, to a child it could mean more than you think.
Gifts are to be dropped off by Friday, December 18 at the location where you picked up your ornament or at the Safe Haven office.

Safe Haven staff scoured Milford last week as they participated in a scavenger hunt as a fun team building activity.
Two teams set out with a list of 25 items to find. Their exploration resulted in finding a brochure with fun things to do in Pike County, a change of address card from the post office, a take out menu, and a bank deposit envelope.
The two teams were instructed to take a photograph with a well known person in Milford. Team One paid a special visit to Commissioner Forbes who was delighted to have his picture taken with Sheila Korick, Lauren Cernek and Sharon Lewis. Unaware that Team One had already been to the commissioner’s office, Team Two solicited a photograph with Commission Karl Wagner.
Peggy Emanuel, Cindy Stine and Cynthia Edwards had a great time as they searched in an effort to complete their list.
At the end of the day when it was all said and done, Team One won the scavenger hunt by a mere five points. Safe Haven staff has been extremely busy this month during the Paint Pike Purple campaign, promoting domestic peace wherever they go. This year’s campaign offered almost 50 different activities. The staff of Safe Haven would like to thank all their neighbors in Pike County for helping them with their efforts to make our community a safer place to live.
